Worthwhile?
Minions/Fiends/Horrors/Vampric fiends/Golem are definitely worth while for damage and minor healing (vampric & golem). They come with you, but you must heal them to keep them. Limited to the number of control.
Spirits in general, carry many uses. Each spirit has a specific use, but you can create a wide variety of them. They can fight, heal, be used to protect or even used to do massive damage. Sadly, they have a time limit and they are immoble. So when you travel, you must say good by to your disembodied friend(s).
Fun? Necros can do good damage, steal life, raise undead, curse foes, and have funny dances.
Ritualists can do good damage, heal, summon spirits, and have backup dancers.
I have a Necro/Mesmer and a Ritualist/Necro.
So I have chosen to have both, the Ritualist and the Necromancer.
Depending on your definition of fun, either one is a good choice. Necromancers should be created in Prophecies (more free skills)
